Dr. Kuhn is uniquely qualified to effectively treat migraines, headaches
and chronic pain. Chiropractic Neurology works beyond the limits of traditional chiropractic and medicine to treat the cause
of these debilitating illnesses. Many patients who have “tried everything” without success, have found significant
help under Dr. Kuhn’s care.
The Facts About Migraines:
Migraines are a neurological condition, not a psychological condition. Migraines are not just annoying,
they can be life threatening causing strokes, coma and even death. Common triggers of migraines include: alcohol, weather,
time zone, caffeine, MSG, glare, hormone changes, hunger, lack of sleep, medications, perfume and stress.
Facts About Chronic Pain:
Fifty million Americans have chronic pain, that is 1/6th of the population. Of those in pain 75% have
had to make changes to their lifestyle because of the pain. Chronic pain can cause: loss of employment and income, isolation,
sleep disorders, marital and family dysfunction, depression and suicide.
Traditional Treatments:
Traditional methods for migraines or chronic pain include medications, surgery or pain management. Medications
often only cover up the symptoms of these kinds of pain. Surgery is often an invasive and may have significant risks.
Psychological methods like pain managment only teach you how to live with pain. Many patients have tried all of
these treatments and still suffer from their pain.
Would you do this to your car?
Imagine your oil light was on. Would you cover it up with a topical ointment so that you couldn't see the
light? Would you surgically remove the light? Would you learn how to deal with it? Or would you do the smart thing
and check your oil? The same is true with your body.
How is pain classified?
Pain is broken down in to 3 classifications when describing it from a neurological perspective. Nociception
is the physiological process of pain transmission; "it's the wiring." Pain is the cognition of and recognition of the nociception
process; "it hurts here." Suffering is the emotional and perceptual distortion that occurs as a result of pain; "What
the pain means to me."
And here's the important part to notice. All pain occurs in the brain; not necessarily where you feel
it. Tissue damage may or may not be present where you feel it. An example of a pain that is caused from
a source away from where you feel it is a referred pain. For example, a pinched nerve in your neck can cause pain
in your arm.
So How Do You Fix Chronic Pain or Migraines?
Change the wiring and you change the nociception. Change your brain and you change your pain. Change
your thoughts and you change your suffering.
How do you do all of those things? First you find where the nervous system has decreased function. Second
you find a way to rehabilitate that weakened area. Third you condition it until it is back to it's normal healthy state.
Imagine if your nervous system was a muscle. If you had a weak muscle, you would exercise until it
was strong again. We'll help you to do the same thing with your nervous system. Dr. Kuhn will diagnose where your nervous
system is weak and provide treatment and home activities that help you to recover. That way you can get
off of the pain merry-go-round and start living you life again.
